Victorian Holiday Events in L.A.
There's no better time than the present to travel to another era and see what it would be like to celebrate the holidays during the Victorian era.
Dedicated to maintaining the tradition of formal, ballroom dancing in an informal world, the Social Daunce Irregulars celebrate their annual Victorian holiday ball with waltzes, polkas, quadrilles and other dances of the 19th century set to the accompaniment of a live band. Patrons are encourage (but not required) to dress in their Victorian "Fancy Dress," military uniforms of the 19th Century, Victorian style ball attire and modern formal wear. Tickets will not be available at the door if the event sells out beforehand -- and it usually does.
This family event will feature authentic, Victorian-style seasonal decorations, including Christmas trees with handmade ornaments. There will be holiday-themed entertainment and strolling carolers, readings of Victorian Christmas stories, ornament-making sessions, a visit from Saint Nick, complimentary cookies and hot cide, self-guided tours of the museum and a horse-drawn trolley to take visitors to the nearby Drum Barracks Museum for a Civil War Christmas.
Experience an authentic replica of a Civil War-era holiday celebration complete with rustic handmade toys, ornaments, and other decorations, and entertainment including seasonal tunes played on a restored 1864 Steinway box grand piano. Re-enactors of the 116th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company D, will set up camp depicting the Civil War soldiers’ holiday. A horse-drawn trolley will take visitors to the nearby Banning Residence Museum to experience its Victorian Christmas program.
Authentic Victorian party with musical ensembles, dancing, parlor games and Victorian interpreters. Experience a 1908 holiday wedding in the grand parlor of the Perry Residence, celebrate the holidays with a family during World War I in the Hale House and meet an Olympian at a 1928 party inside the Valley Knudsen Garden Residence/Shaw House. Special event ticket prices are in effect; reservations required.

Step back to Christmas 1878 at Rancho Los Cerritos, where the Bixby family operates an extensive sheep ranch and extended family, guests and ranch workers celebrate the holidays. Costumed docents lead lamplight tours of the 163-year-old adobe house filled with costumed living history characters as visitors eavesdrop on theatrical vingettes of life in Los Angeles circa 1878.
