L.A. Halloween Events for Grown-ups

Here are a few Halloween events for adults -- events that aren't happening in nightclubs. If you want to go to a bar or a club, click here for a list of the 20 best Halloween parties in Hollywood. 1. Dead Author Reading: Edgar Allan Poe & Washington Irving   Silver Lake / Echo Park

Edgar Allen Poe and Washington Irving will be exhumed from their graves, reading excerpts from their work and listening to the music of Common Rotation. 21 and over.


2. Full Moon Halloween Horror Road Show   Studio City

Cult movie impresario Charles Band will stage the Halloween incarnation of his variety show featuring puppets, creatures and rare film clips. Proceeds from the Full Moon Horror Road Show benefit the Special Olympics.


3. Halloween Chamber Of Horrors   Hollywood

From Hannibal Lecter's jail cell in "Silence of the Lambs" to the masks of Jason and Mike Myers from the "Friday the 13th" and "Halloween" movies, get face to face with items from some of Hollywood's scariest films.

4. Halloween: the Movie - Costume Ball   Hollywood

It's been 30 years since hockey mask-wearing psycopath Michael Myers first scared moviegoers in John Carpenter's classic slasher flick Halloween. The renovated Music Box, boasting a new rooftop lounge, will host two floors of DJs (including OC’s finest, Peter G.), sexy aerialists, flying witches but hopefully no serial killers.

5. Haunted Catalina Tours   Catalina

Chuck Liddell, Catalina’s unofficial island historian and walking tour host will the spookier side of Catalina Island with haunted Catalina tours, set to begin on Halloween.


6. Humans Are Such Easy Prey Drive-In Series   East Hollywood (Thai Town)

Drive in and lock your car doors for recurring Friday night thrills and chills. The Steve Allen Theater presents hair-raising horror flicks every Friday until the squirm-inducing double-bill on Halloween evening, Blood Sucking Fiends and Aliens. The screamings and screenings will begin at 9 p.m. in the parking lot. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Additional seating will be available inside.

7. The Joker: Halloween Party   Santa Monica

DJ Garth Trinidad of KCRW sets the aural backdrop for Wokcano's "Batman"-themed Halloween party. Costume contests include: Best Joker, Sexiest Bat Girl and Best Overall Costume. There's even a hosted vodka bar from 9-10 p.m.


8. LACMA MUSE Costume Ball   Miracle Mile

(Oct. 31) Spend the night dancing and dining in an art-inspired costume at LACMA's 5th annual Muse Costume Ball. This year's event takes its inspiration from Heroes and Villains: The Battle for Good in India's Comics and features a special presentation by Gotham Chopra; live music by Voxhaul Broadcast; DJ sets throughout the night; installations and projections by Mindshare Labs and Museum of Traffic; an after-hours viewing of the Heroes and Villains exhibit; a costume contest for the Best Hero, Best Villain and Most Creative; and an open bar featuring Dos Equis and Malibu.

9. Lolita Halloween Tea Party   Culver City

In collaboration with Japanese pop-culture store Japan LA, Royal/T will host a Lolita-themed Halloween Tea Party. And who better than Dame Darcy to show up and sign her new book, "Gasoline: A Rock n' Roll Apocalyptic Fairy Tale"? Girls will have the opportunity to become living mannequins in the black rose garden, while photographer Neil Sharum shoots pictures. If street parking is unavailable, park in the lot next to Trader Joe's, which has 2 hours free parking.

10. Tango Masquerade   San Fernando Valley

A three-day international Halloween tango weekend featuring the Devil of Elegance a.k.a. master Argentine tango instructor Orlando Paiva Jr.

11. Totally Bitchin' Night of the Dead   Fairfax District

Celebrate Dia de los Muertos at this 1980's themed party hosted by skate pro Tony Alva at his eponymous store. Alva and his pal Jackson Howard will DJ the event that features a gallery opening for the artist Votan and live music by El Mariachi Sexorcisto.


12. Vintage Halloween Costume Party   Downtown L.A.

Maxwell DeMille's weekly art deco dance and supper club transforms into a haunted nightclub for this vintage Halloween costume party with big band music and performances featuring Dean Mora and his 20-piece orchestra plus a spooktacular floor show by the Satin Dollz Pin Up Dancers.

13. West Hollywood Drag Race and Beauty Pageant   West Hollywood

Break out the Lucite heels (2-inch minimum required!) and get ready to race at this annual drag queen extravaganza. Don't worry about working out or warming up. You can strut your way to the finish line.

14. West Hollywood Halloween Carnival   West Hollywood

Drag queens teetering in stilettos and swaying under beehive wigs is the order of the day at this annual street carnival featuring the most outrageous Halloween costumes outside of San Francisco. From divas to drag queens to Dracula, more than 400,000 people participate in one of the world's largest colorful Mardi Gras-style street celebrations. Not for the young or easily offended! (Tip: Expect plenty of Sarah Palin impersonators.) The West Hollywood Costume Carnival takes place on Santa Monica Blvd. from La Cienega Blvd. to La Peer Dr.


15. Yelloween   Westchester

Head to Hopscotch, the in-house bar of the hip Custom Hotel, for a costume party featuring magician Alex Ward, DJ Daisy O'dell and free snacks until 10 p.m.
