David J's best of L.A.
David J Haskins may hail from England, but he is a now a confirmed lover of Los Angeles (he spends half the year in the Franklin Hills near Hollywood). As a former member of gothic rock heavy hitters Bauhaus (and alt rock faves Love & Rockets), Haskins knows his dark nightlime haunts. But hey, even rockers have to wake up early and eat breakfast sometimes. Here is where "J" eats his, and also where he spends his nights (Haskins also DJs all over California).
I love this place. It’s very New York. A classic old school diner. I like to sit at the counter where you can watch the hard working cooks sling hash with panache. I recommend The Devil’s Mess ( sure fire hangover cure, club kids! )
Best Indian food in LA, if not the US. The lunch buffet is delectable. Great tandoori. A little slice of London by way of Bombay.
Great old Italian place. The ceiling is festooned with inscribed chianti bottles, tokens of many wonderful nights spent in the glow of it’s old Hollywood charm. The resident ivory tickler is entertaining as well. Stick some green backs in the gold fish bowl on your way out.
This East LA hut in the hood has the best fish tacos north of the border. It also features a star mariachi singer / guitarist, a big mustachioed man in league with the saints and angels.
Perfect place to head when one is missing old Blighty. Good clean Guinness to wash down the footy on the telly. The big patio with the gently trickling fountain is a perfect chill spot. The pea soup is excellent, ditto bangers & mash ( with lashings of Coleman’s English mustard, please! ).
I held a residency here for a couple of years and still turn in the occasional DJ set.The rooftop vista is quite awe-inspiring. James Bond ultra lounge a go go. Sexy!
Laid back cool vibe to this club which features some wonderful DJ events. A hotbed of cross cultural fertilization. Dig it!
Elegant art deco jewel. All crystal chandeliers and sumptuous red velvet. Friendly bar staff, great sound system and original 1920’s sprung dance floor. What more do you want?
Sepulchral atmosphere ideal for nursing big tumblers of scotch whilst conducting secret liaisons in the big leather booths.
Familial and funky with great acoustics and a nice warm atmosphere, this former strip joint was my first choice for the ‘Silver For Gold’ stage production after show party.
